It ain’t easy being greasy
Twas the night before Easter and all were at peace and here comes grandma with the hot comb and hair grease’…..Spark any memories ladies? As a kid I vividly remember all of us lined up the night before a special occasion to get our hair greases up and pressed. Man, our hair would be so slick that it would stay until you washed it out. I for one used to love that 1-piece, sock-it-to-me bang that spread all the way across your forehead. Mmm hmm…remember that? The problem was that no matter how good my hair looked it was so greasy I could’ve done a Soul Glow commercial. You know…Coming to America…The big grease spot on the couch….I think you get my point.
Anyway, for me that’s all in the past. Now, I try not to use greasy hair products and my hair has never been healthier. And my face isn’t breaking out either. But, that’s me. Have you made the switch or do you feel that your hair needs grease to shine and be healthy? For those who can’t imagine life without grease, you should try pre-shampoo oils. You apply these oils to your scalp and massage them in for about 20 minutes before washing your hair. They give your hair incredible shine after your hair is dry…trust! Browse through the pre-shampoo oils on this site.
It’s my personal theory that your scalp is an extension of the skin on your face, and I wouldn’t put grease all over my face. A clean scalp is a happy scalp…no need in clogging it up. Could that be why most times when you go to a Dominican Salon minimal amounts of grease are used? You certainly couldn’t have that bouncy hair with tons of grease. Hmmm. Makes you think!
As a rule of thumb after styling my hair, I take the shake test: I ask my girls to give me a shake - if it moves we’re good!

Absolutely hilarious Chaka!!!!!
I agree 100% with you on the grease thing….can’t get with it. My mother is old school and I had to hip her to the pre-shampoo oil game so she could stop insisting that I “grease” my scalp! lol
And believe it or not, it took me a long time to try the pre-shampoo oil thing. It wasn’t until after I had a conversation with Chimena (Dominican stylist here at RBH!) about grease and how oil massages on the scalp before shampooing made a big difference. I’ve been using the oils ever since and my scalp is great. Now, I do have an EXTREMELY dry spot at the crown of my head, so I dab a little bit of cocoa butter there every once in a while.
You can also use the oils on the shaft of your hair before shampooing for shine. When I first tried the oil as a pre-poo, naturally I got some of the oil on the root o f my hair where the newgrowth was and when my hair was dry I could see where the oil stopped because of the difference in sheen.
Hey J, I don’t know about you but, did you ever get your ear burned with the hot comb? It was a right of passage in my family. Oh…and don’t start cryin’ about it or mom and grandma would get piiiised. Everytime I hear bacon sizzling in the frying pan I cringe.
I have many burns on my ears from the hot comb!
So we oil our hair b4 we wash it? I feel like $ is being wasted since right after Im washing it out.
Ha ha ha rofl….brings back memories….I begged my mother for a gheri curl when I was 10yrs old (sp?). I also begged for breakdance lessons. I got the latter….she didn’t want the curl chemicals to break my hair off. Ahhhh….the 80’s….good times….good times.
On a more serious note….Does anyone ever know what happened to Sta Sof Fro products? Are they still good for our hair? Do you remember the radio commercial song????….It’s sad, but I do….and here it goes: (Think the 5 Heart Beats)

Well, that’s as close as I remember. Correct the lyrics if they’re wrong.
My Spanish friend (Spain, not Latino) says her mom uses sea salt with olive oil to part and scrub her scalp before shampooing to moisturize and invigorate the scapp. She now does this at home by herself once a week and loves it. I haven’t tried this yet but I have put oil in my hair during my weekend house cleaning and then I wash it out later. Some times it doesn’t leave my hair as soft as I would like but the sheen is there.
lilkunta -Think about it, you use conditioner the same way. You put conditioner on your hair for about 15 minutes with (or without) heat and then you wash it out - its done the job!
The pre-shampoo oil works the same way….you put it on your scalp and massage it for a few minutes and then wash it out - its done the job! Try it out and let us know what you think. :–)
