These are the items Elizabeth Adorno makes sure she has handy before applying the popular yet controversial Brazilian Keratin straightening treatment in her Dominican salon at 1811 W. 4th Street, Wilmington, Delaware.
The Brazilian Keratin treatment has been praised for its ability to straighten curly hair for up to 4 months while being criticized in the same breath for the dangerous active ingredient formaldehyde. Eli Castillo of RoundBrushHair.com talked with Elizabeth Adorno about this very service that is offered in her Dominican Hair salon.
RoundBrushHair.com: Congratulations on being our July’s Featured Stylist! Tell us a little bit about how you go started in hair care?
Elizabeth Adorno: Thank you! I studied at Wilfred Academy Of Hair And Beauty Culture in Philadelphia. I have been doing hair for 24 years. I have experience in cuts, colors, updos and now Brazilian Keratin.
RoundBrushHair.com: Yes, the Brazilian Keratin. I’m really interested to know more. I have heard very little about this treatment, both good and bad. Tell us a little more about what it is and how it compares to a regular relaxer.
Elizabeth Adorno: Sure, well I took the training at the International Hair Show in NY earlier this year. You can’t compare a relaxer to the Brazilian Keratin because it’s is a natural deep treatment that is made from the cacao plant. Relaxers are chemical straighteners. If you’re relaxed and get the Brazilian Keratin, you will still need the relaxer first.
RoundBrushHair.com: Relaxers have more chemicals, but the Brazilian Keratin has formaldehyde right? Isn’t that dangerous?
Elizabeth Adorno: Yes, but it only has 2% formaldehyde and it’s used to keep the product fresh. When I apply the Brazilian keratin I use a mask on both my face and the client’s face. I also use a fan to keep air circulating to prevent inhalation of the formaldehyde. The problem is if you inhale the smell.
RoundBrushHair.com:Can you describe the process of the application?
Elizabeth Adorno:
Wash the hair with a special shampoo.
Dry the hair Apply the treatment (it’s like putting a permanent color in the hair) Then use the flat iron (the iron will bring the shine to the hair) and the hair receives the treatment.
RoundBrushHair.com: How often does the treatment need to be re-applied?
Elizabeth Adorno: Every 3 or 4 months, but it really depends on how you take care of your hair.
RoundBrushHair.com: There are a lot of do’s and don’ts that go along with the treatment right? Can you tell us some of them?
Elizabeth Adorno: Yes, for the first 4 days, the person should not apply anything to their hair not even head bands or gomitas (pony tail holders). After the treatment I supply all my clients with instructions and information that they should know about the keratin. It’s important to know that after the keratin treatment people should only use shampoo with keratin and no ammonium chloride.
The Brazilian Keratin should only be applied by a Brazilian Keratin certified beautician. If you’re interested in this service, look over the step-by-step video we found and then give Elizabeth Adorno a call!

Hello…I love the video and the procedure. I have a few questions.
1. How long does it take to apply procedure?
2. What does someone do if their hair grows out faster and you have the ‘ridges’ from new growth visable…especially in the front ‘edges’?
3. What is the cost for this application?
At one time I had the “Japanese’ straightener applied to my hair about 6 years ago…unfortunately it was done properly ( I have 2 texture hair (frizzy and somewhat not-I am bi-racial)); before the weekend was over I had total frizz hair..the procedure was costly and really upset me. I went to a well know ‘experienced’ salon in NYC.

Hello. Im African American and have been a hairstylist for 10years. I love healthy hair. It is my goal with each client. I have clients with and without relaxers. With this product I want to use it but I didnt see a difference from what I already do. If you had not used the brazilian keratin treatment and still ceramic ironed it it would have come out the same with the amount of heat used and her texture. What I need to know is what was the difference?
Hi,
Is this the same as the Bottanica keratin treatment? My friend had this done and it came out AWESOME! She explained it the same way you have…it seems that it’s the same thing. There seems to be so many keratin’s out there!?!?!?
Thanks!
So the technician has a mask ..what does the client have ..The extent people will go to for hairstyling ease …None of the individuals promoting or using the product have any idea of the long term effects this preparation has …And what is even more freightning is the lack of knowledge or consideration of health effects by the larger promoters, distributors of this product ..Do not take the manufacrtures word there is no formaldahyde in the prreparations ..This is the chemical agent that makes the preparation work !!!
Formaldahyde comes in many different forms ..Many different chemical forms..Do the home work ..look up the ingredients ..think cautiously about what happens when the clients leave your salon and what lingers after the process is performed.. Everyone is out of their mind..If they believe this product just evaporates into thin air..And where is the fan blowing it and why do you need a fan ..because the fumes are toxic…
If this process was not toxic or dangerous why didnt Loreal pick it up immedietly ..or Procter and Gamble..Revlon…Or any of the larger distributing companies..3.3 billion in sales for Loreal 2007 ..doesnt anyone think they would have picked up this produuct or the chemical companies would have went to them first …They have more spending power than all ..they pay top dollar for everything..Ok maybe not top dollar for anything But believe me if this product was safe they would have it… That is why manufacters NOBODYS from the bowels of NOWHERE create the product preparation because they have Nothing to loose. or care if the public or professionals become gravely ill.. It is all about money SCARY!!!!!.Remember all chemicals are toxic.. but once they are heated above 300 degrees and airborne is when they are at their most lethal..
I have been a hairstylist for 10 years. I am really curious about this product. I was wondering if you give me some more info, or let me know when and where the next training will be. I have lots of questions. Thank you.
I am a doctor and I can tell you that the use of formaldehyde is dangerous no matter what preventive care is done. The Anvisa( It’s a Brazillian goverment agency like our FDA) has banned the use of formaldehyde because it’a detrmental to one’s health although many salons still use that. I have never heard of having to use formaldehyde to keep a product fresh!!!!!!!! I just wanted to alert peolpe. Keeping using your relaxers, doing your blow out but do not jeopardize your health in the name of vanitty. Also check with the FDA before using any new treatments.
I’m here because I’m researching Keratin - since I’ve been hearing about how dangerous it can be. I’m Dominican so I’m also in the same boat as many other women, I want beautiful, manageable hair but don’t want to put my health at risk. But I also don’t like misinformation.
Maria, the doctor commented above that she’s never heard of formaldehyde being used as a preservative. Wrong. The FDA website themselves says, “Cosmetic hair products may be adequately preserved with, for example, formaldehyde releasing preservatives to prevent microbial contamination.”
In no way am I saying that formaldehyde is safe but women need to be aware that it is also in other products already. For example, nail hardeners. FDA approves

does the hair revert to being somewhat curly after shampooing, similar to a relaxer? or does the keratin treatment keep it straight?
thank you.
