A Pink Carpet Kind Of Affair….

Published by admin at 7:12 pm under Featured Stylists

September’s featured Dominican salon:

Sintias Dominican Salon Front

On August 29, 2008 doors opened to the first Dominican salon and Dominican hair product retailer in Landover, Maryland - Sintia’s Dominican Salon. The grand opening spared no expense as customer service, style and comfort were the main focus.

Upon arrival customers were welcomed as celebrities with curbside pink carpet and matching ‘grand opening’ pink and brown balloons. And if the outside didn’t impress you, the lavish layout inside certainly could not go unnoticed. Pink cushioned benches accented with brown plush pillows lined the waiting area and a towering 7 foot tall wooden finished armoire stocked with a wide selection RoundBrushHair Dominican Products gave customers the opportunity of relaxing or browsing.

Pink being the salon’s signature color couldn’t go unnoticed even if you tried – from the enormous pink butterfly logo which captures your attention as you walk through the doors to the pink blow dryers the stylists use to perfect that sought after Dominican blowout – pink was everywhere.

The salon is the brain child of Claudina Mesa who named the salon after her late sister Sintia who dreamed of having a Dominican hair salon some day. Sintia’s picture graces the wall of the salon with a striking resemblance to her older sister Claudina as if looking down on the salon participating in every aspect of operations.

Sintias Dominican Salon

Claudina opened the salon with American business partners Keisha Gilchrist and India Rogers to ensure the salon would meet the needs of African American women who frequent Dominican Salons the most. Customers are given service tickets to fill out before seeing any stylist which is translated into Spanish for the stylist to read. “The customer cards help both the stylist and client. The language barrier is the biggest problem with Dominican salons and it’s just one of the many ways we’ve set ourselves apart from other Dominican salons in the area” states Claudina as she offers champagne to a customer under the hair dyer.

To a person unaware of the salon opening less than 24 hours ago, the salon looked as though it had been serving customers for years. Every hair dyer was occupied (thanks to the grand opening special of free Silicon Mix deep conditioning), the smoke from the stylist’s blowers forced the front doors to be propped open and towels couldn’t be washed fast enough. “The grand opening weekend was initially just for family and friends, but at some point that got tossed out the window” laughs co-owner India Rogers who hustles to find more dryers to accommodate waiting clients.

But those waiting didn’t seem bothered, “it’s a new salon, so you can’t expect everything to go perfectly; but I can tell they’re going to need a lot more stylists in here” says Jacqueline Maynard who lives 5 minutes away from the new salon. Other customers sipped on champagne with strawberries and helped themselves to the “sweet shop” table full of cupcakes, brownies, lollipops and other goodies until a shampoo bowl became open.

And if they weren’t sipping on champagne or munching on sweets, they were browsing hair products for sale. When asked about the partnership with RoundBrushHair to sell Dominican hair products co-owner Keisha Gilchrist said “these are the products most Dominican salons use, but until now you could only buy them online. We love the fact that women can now purchase these products directly from our salon and not have to worry about the wait time that comes with shipping. Also, women should be able to smell, look and hold a potential purchase and finally they have a place to do it!” The partnership was ideal for RoundBrushHair as well, founder Jennifer Drew recalls how “more and more we were getting calls from people living in Maryland who wanted to pick up products from our warehouse. And unfortunately the warehouse isn’t set up for customers, so I’m happy we found a home for the products at Sintia’s Dominican salon. We’re working on similar arrangements for our customers in other states.”

I went to the salon during the Grand Opening and I must say its the BEST Dominican experience I’ve had since being in MD. I used to drive so and far to get to a Dominican Salon. Convenient, EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE and great stylists!

I went to the grand opening and had a very pleasant experience. The salon (atmosphere) is nice and the staff is professional and accomodating. I encourage all to experience at least once. I wish them all the best!!

  20. Alisandeon 09 Sep 2008 at 5:14 pm

I went on Sunday and I abosulutely LOVE the way my hair turned out!!

My hair is thick, I haven’t have a touch-up in 3 months. The way Jalissa blew my hair bone-straight I can probably stretch out getting a touch-up for another three.

The staff was very friendly and extremely professional, I will continue to patronize this salon as it is close to home and ultra convenient to get-to.

    You will not be dissapointed….

  21. Nerissaon 09 Sep 2008 at 7:07 pm

I went during the grand opening and it was AMAZING!!! Everyone was so nice and the stylist even took the time to remember my name, lol! It’s the little things that make a difference to me. I was impressed with the salon and I’m glad I don’t have to travel to Silver Spring anymore! Claudina was awesome, she made me feel welcomed! I told all of my girlfriends to check it out.

  22. Sweet Pon 09 Sep 2008 at 7:24 pm

I went to Sintia’s in the pouring down rain on Saturday (Hurricane Hanna). And I was truly impressed! I was very well taken care of, the customer service was excellent. Everyone was pleasant, professional and extremely helpful. I took a chance and even let them trim my hair… I LOVE MY HAIR!!!!! The stylist did a superb job! I have been getting compliments all week. This shop is really into hair care! I just found myself a new shop which means I don’t have to drive all the way to Silver Spring. YAY!

Sintia’s is highly recommended! So, go ahead and give it a try!

  23. Shaneleon 10 Sep 2008 at 6:44 am

I had a great experience at Sintia’s. I myself have been doing hair in a salon since I was 12. So when it comes to my hair, I am skeptical about letting anyone touch it. But Julissa did a wonderful job and I am proud to say, A week later it still looks as if I came fresh out the salon. I will be a frequent client at Sintia’s!!

  24. tenishaon 10 Sep 2008 at 7:24 am

i am so glad that there is a dominican shop in md now instead of traveling to dc and in hopes to finding parking. i took my girlfriend there for her first dominican experience and she and her daughter loved it. i’ve been going to dominicans now for several years and i just moved to md 4 yrs ago. i ‘ve pretty much been traveling to ny every other weekend. thanks to sinitra!!!!!!!

    we consider ourselves family!
my hair didn’t fair well at first, but Claudina and Jalissa would not let me leave the salon disatisfied. Jalissa jumped in did a “re-do” and my hair looked fabulous!
I recieved tons of complliments over the next several days. I will be back!!!

Alexis did my youngest daughters hair, she has a snesitive scalp and can not tolerate too much heat’ Alexis was gentle and Michelyns hair looked wonderful!

    Muchas gracias!!!!

I went to Sintia’s on Labor Day and I loved my hair. It was my first time every going to a Dominican Salon and let me tell you, it won’t be my last. I was seen as soon as I walked in the door and was out in about 2 hours. My hair was so soft and bouncy, i couldn’t believe it. I will make it mandatory that I go every 2 weeks. Congrats on the new salon and keep up the good work

  28. Natashaon 10 Sep 2008 at 10:50 am

Congrats and much success! I cannot wait to check it out!! Are appts required?

  29. leeleeon 10 Sep 2008 at 11:37 am

Do you know if they allow you to bring your child like so many other Dominican salons do? You know, your child sits in the waiting area while you get your hair serviced?

  30. Cindyon 10 Sep 2008 at 11:37 am

It was a girls day out , I took my sister and 3yr old neice , the three of us came out feeling extra beautiful! Great job ladies!

  31. Gloriaon 10 Sep 2008 at 12:32 pm

I stopped by on the way to my regular salon, just to see what the name of this new salon was and made the mistake of going in now I am hooked. The service was great, the atmosphere was great and I walked out looking great. Our community needed this.

  32. KKayon 10 Sep 2008 at 9:34 pm

Ok maybe my group was the only one who waited an hour + before getting under the dryer. They did a great job at being hospitable and accommodating. The drinks and pastries were a nice touch. The salon was clean, bright and comfortable. The ladies did a fabulous job for the first weekend open. BUT if we’re gonna talk about the salon, lets talk about it all. There were not enough people on hand to wash, roll and style the amount of people that came through the door.
My hair was gorgeous and I’m hoping the wait time was strictly due to it being opening day. I will absolutely go back because of all the qualities I mentioned above BUT if I have to spend another 4 hours there my second time will be my last.

  33. leeleeon 11 Sep 2008 at 10:20 am

I got my answer. Thanks to co-owner Keisha. Thanks

  34. Lesaon 11 Sep 2008 at 5:49 pm

I went to Sintias during the grand opening weekend and the place is great. Even though it got a little crowded, everyone was so nice and helpful that it was well worth it. AND my hair turned out perfect. They’ve got a loyal customer in me already. :-)

  35. leeleeon 12 Sep 2008 at 8:08 am

I was there yesterday, Sept. 11, and I was just going to check it out and meet Julissa since that’s who I was recommended to see. I had my 6 yr old son with me and they were ready to take me in as soon as I stepped through the door. So my son stayed up front with his DVD player and was happy while I was in the back getting my hair done.
The atmosphere was sooooo nice and relaxing. Alexia did my hair. I came in there looking for Julissa but am more than satisfied that Alexia did my hair. It came out perfect. Julissa does wonderful hair too. I haven’t had a touch up in almost 3 months and you couldn’t tell. I have extremely thick hair and after getting that deep conditioner my hair was so soft and relaxed it was amazing. Whatever they sprayed on my hair before putting the rollers in gave my hair additional softness.

I wrapped my hair last night and got up this morning with it looking fabulous! The shampoo girl did an amazing job. I don’t know her name but she can’t speak word but is very good getting across what she needs or wants you to do and with shampooing and conditioning your hair and setting it she is great.

They make sure you don’t dehydrate under the dryers. You are offered bottled water throughout your visit which I feel is extremely nice.

I know this shop is new and I hope if it changes it only improves which is hard for me to imagine them doing because everything seems so perfect now. I am recommending them to all my family and friends. The location is right across from the old Landover Mall in the shopping center that looks like they are rebuilding. You can’t miss it! Get there as soon as you can. You will not regret it.

  36. Wendyon 13 Sep 2008 at 6:12 pm

I went to the salon on Sunday Sept 7th. I waited about 45 min to be taken back. I stressed to the girl that was doing my relaxer that I had a sensitive scalp. I came out with a bad burn. I was in the salon for over 5 hours. When my hair was done it was beautiful, but there was dye all over the back of my shirt. I was told to wash it as soon as I got home - no compensation. The dye did not come out.

I will give the salon another try because it is closer to my house that Zuni’s. I hope they step things up and remember customer service.

  37. tameckaon 15 Sep 2008 at 3:54 pm

    how r the prices?

  38. Lalaon 15 Sep 2008 at 8:10 pm

Cheap! The wash and sets are only $35 and they are always running some kind of special. There are coupons on thier website - and on certain Sundays (when Redskins play at home) the wash and sets are $25. I saved money on GAS and the cost of the service

  39. Christinaon 19 Sep 2008 at 7:07 am

I went yesterday after work and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I do suggest going early Sat or Sun morning or in the middle of the day, as it was PACKED in there. But they moved as fast as they could and I LOVE my hair. I went to Julissa; she is great! $35 for a wash and set is well worth it and I love the movement and texture of my hair!

  40. Ronnion 19 Sep 2008 at 8:06 am

My daughter and I just went two days ago. First, the salon is very pretty (I love the color scheme) and the staff is extremely organized and efficient. Our hair still feels as soft and silky as it did when we left the salon. I have very long hair so to get my hair done in 3 hours is a miracle in itself. I would highly recommend Sintia’s to anyone who doesn’t go to the salon often because of time constraints. Plus they do a fabulous job on all types of hair and the prices are reasonable. We will definitely be back in two weeks.

  41. Keishaon 19 Sep 2008 at 2:26 pm

I went to Sintias 2 weeks ago. I was very pleased with the service there. Keisha greeted me as soon as I walked in the door. Everyone was so nice and they offered water. That was a first for me in a salon but very nice. I am so glad to find a Dominican Salon close to home that way I don’t have to travel to Silver Spring anymore. Thank You! Their prices are great as well. Im glad they offer the roundbrushhair products too. Julissa hooked me up. Thank you! My hair was so nice and bouncy when I left. They have a client for life.

  42. Ashleyon 22 Sep 2008 at 12:07 am

I finally had the opportunity to visit the salon today (SUN) and must admit that I am pleaantly surprised. I was there before the salon opened and unlike many Dominican Salons there was actually a staff member there before opening time. The salon was beautiful, clean, the system was well organized. Initially, I was displeased with my hair beacause I wanted it straight and it was styled curly. Before leaving, the owner India, asked if I was satisfied. I told her that I usually wear my hair straight and it was a little too curly. Within in 5 minutes I was back in the chair and ultimately got the straight hair I wanted AND the stylist did it without attitude!!! I rate Sintias customer service at 100%! I’ll definitely go back :)

  45. leeleeon 29 Sep 2008 at 2:50 pm

Everyone should give it a try. I’ve gone 3 times so far and its great! I got a touch-up, cellophane and a cut and couldn’t ask for more. I’ve tried other Dominican salons and this is the best so far. I will stick with this one. The word is out so there might be a little wait on some days. Be prepared. I’ve only had Alexi and Julissa do my hair. Julissa cut mine and told me to stick with the cellophane color. She said its good for the hair. She gets the hair bone straight too. Alexi is sweet and is a bit more gentle with your hair and listens to what you want. Both are the best! There are a couple of others in there too that get the job done. I think one is Giovanni (not sure if I’m spelling her name right). She sits across from Julissa and the other one sits across from Alexi. There are plenty of people who can speak English in the shop so there should be no confusion.

    ENJOY!

  46. Pumpkinon 02 Oct 2008 at 12:20 pm

I went to the salon last week. The detangling process was a nightmare (due to the fact that I am natural and I have a lot of hair) but after that process everything was a breeze. I received a cellophane, deep conditioner and blow dry and curl. My hair is beautiful and family friends are telling me that I look 10 yrs younger. I love the way my hair feels and will be returning.

  47. Peacheson 02 Oct 2008 at 5:32 pm

Does anyone have knowledge of how well the do with short hair (just below the ear)?

  48. Iiliaon 07 Oct 2008 at 1:49 pm

I have gone to Sintia’s Dominican Salon 2 times and was very satisfied. My first trip to the Salon I had my hair blown dry straight, my second trip I had my roots straighten but kept the curl from the rollers. I must say my hair looked hot both times and my Fiance loved touching my hair. Looking forward to my next trip to the salon.

Keep up the good work Ladies. I am very excited and proud of your venture and I am sure Sintia is smiling down on you all.

    Con Much Amor

I went in a week ago to get my hair done and my hair is as pretty as it was when I got out of the chair. They did an amazing job on my hair I will continue to get my hair done there. I did not know anything about the death of Sintia, until after I got my hair done. I am so happy that friends and family could come together to do something so positive after tragic circumstances. It just makes me feel happy that I too can be apart of her (Sintia’s) dream. Good Luck with everything.

I didn’t go for the “bone straight” hairdo. I had a trim and style to my fine, curly hair. I was satisfied. The only thing that was frustrating was the language barrier. Other than the language thing, the salon customer service was great. I would go back!

  51. Abion 16 Nov 2008 at 4:19 pm

I just went today with my niece. I have natural hair. I had a black cellophane and blow out done. I was satisfied with the results, but there’s needs to be some sort of better organization so as to not have people that came early wait for others. Maybe, I should not have gotten the cellophane. We got there at 8:30am(salon opens at 9pm) and left at 12pm. I’m usually out of Egyptian salons in Chicago in lesser time, but I also know they had more staff. They really need more staff. Besides that, this is a great location(no more Silver Spring!) and the people were very friendly and nice.

  52. Dallison 06 Jan 2009 at 12:55 pm

I have been to the salon EVERY week since the grand opening! Best Dominican Salon in Maryland!!!!!

  53. Keiannaon 20 May 2009 at 5:30 pm

I must say, I went To Sintia’s Salon last Sat. and I am hooked. This was my first time going to a Dominican Hair Salon & I have natural hair. The stylist hooded my hair up to the point it looks like I have a perm. I am in love with it! Ms. Claudia was very active through out the Salon making sure the customers were ok. The Stylist were very professional. The Salon looked & smelled so good. It was a clean, positive environment, just over all wonderful. I have never given any salon 5 stars…..I give this salon an A+. I love it…..I will be going from now on. I’m sold!

  54. JonesYon 23 Sep 2009 at 4:16 pm

I went there 2x and didn’t like the way the did my hair- I live about 10 mins away so I thought this would be great! However they only have 3 styles for your hair that you have to pick from- I tried to explain that I want in straight but to flip the ends & pin curl them… Couldn’t do it!

so I’m back at Arelis in Beltsville— Yeah~!

  55. lizon 02 Dec 2009 at 3:30 pm

Forget Santias go to the place on riggs plaza wayy better and much better customer service then them

  56. reneeon 23 May 2010 at 8:29 pm

I know this is late but I went there about a month and half ago. I did not enjoy my experience. I felt like a cattle. I paid roughly $65.00 maybe more I cannot remember. I felt that although it was organized for the most part, the employees only spoke spanish which brings down the level of comfort. I know some spanish but I am no longer fluent. I believe if you service majority english speaking clientale, then that should be the 1st language spoken.

Furthermore, I was really angry and almost felt embarrassed because as it was my time for a blow out. The one hair dresser said no no no to my hair and then got another hair dresser and began a conversation of spanish about my hair. Luckily, as i mentioned I know some spanish. The 1st hairdresser said, “look at this” I cannot do this hair. the second said whats wrong. The 1st said she has extensions. I cannot do this. Then she spoke to me and only said Sorry in english as the 2nd lady took me to her seat.

This was unnecessary and definitely not professional. I had two extensions in my hair because I like the fullness. The length of my hair is very long and I was almost mortified by the rudeness of hairdresser #1. Needless to say, it will be a long day in hell before I return to this place.

oh and it wasnt that clean either!
